| Thanks to the rebates offered by the federal and state government, solar is taking off in the United Steates. Store owners, such as Segner, the owner of Rann Pharmacy, is following up on his promise to go "green" by installing a photovoltaic solar system on his business' roof. In order to cover half of his electricity costs, he is installing a $177,000 photovoltaic system. With the incentives available from state and federal government, the payback period on his system is five years instead of 20 (which it would be without the rebates). The rebates are pushing the solar movement forward. Pennsylvania, which started the Sunshine Grant solar rebate program, has made solar practical. Solar rebates are great for homeowners and businesses alike. Businesses can receive solar energy credits, which generate thousands of dollars a year in additional income. When electrical utilities cannot produce enough renewable energy to meet certain requirements, they will purchase renewable electricity from businesses and residents. Credits are expensive to purchase for the utility company, so businesses make a good deal of money. Installing solar systems also protect business owners from rising energy rates.
